The Arditti Quartet is synonymous with new music. Stockhausen, Lachenmann, Kurtág, Ferneyhough, Andriessen, to name just a few – in the course of more than forty years, the quartet has intensively collaborated with hundreds of composers to create new string quartet repertoire.
Just take a look at a score from the Arditti Quartet’s repertoire; clearly, a lot of music is anything but straightforward. The quartet regularly wrestles its way through scores in which music staves, bars and even notes are markedly absent. For this reason, the quartet examines the issue of notation in this lecture-recital: what does it mean and what are the implications of notation for both the player and listener?
