The various elements of this programme are interconnected in all kinds of ways.  The world première of Joey Roukens’s newest quartet forms the programme’s nucleus. One of his favourite composers, Rameau, is also featured and Roukens has arranged his works freely for the occasion. Ravel’s string quartet acts as a riveting counterbalance to the Roukens quartet, which exploits rhythm and timbre in a completely different way.

The Dudok Quartet is often drawn to explore music beyond the Dutch borders, but feels very much in its element in the Dutch composer Roukens’s music: ‘categorising Joey Roukens’s compositions as classical or non-classical music is irrelevant. It is simply music that fits the 21st century and as a result of this it has an extremely direct impact.’
