QUOTE / Emerson String Quartet
My colleagues and I eagerly anticipate the first edition of the String Quartet Biennale in Amsterdam in early 2018 — an entire week with an intensive focus on canonic works as well as more unusual corners of the repertoire. Concerts every morning, afternoon and evening will provide the participants with opportunities to share insights, to collaborate with guest artists and to demonstrate to the audience perhaps more fully than is possible in other contexts just how important the string quartet is to the core of our musical culture: why almost every composer is inspired, or feels the creative necessity, to confront the challenges involved in writing string quartets. In the course of the week, the listener will be exposed to the astonishing variety of timbres, styles, moods and narrative strategies that are possible within the realm of the string quartet.
